Tips for Starting Your Own Construction Company

December 27, 2014

Before you plan to set up your own construction business that will
help you maximize profits and get better returns on investment, it is
essential to keep certain things in mind. You need to answer some basic
question first, why you want to start this company? Is this the correct
time to initiate this business? Do you have enough funds and resources
that are required to start a construction business? Once you get the
answers to these questions, follow the below tips to ensure smooth
functioning of the company.

Proper management: Decide on a name for your company
and then the first thing to do is to manage as a Limited Liability
Company (an LLC) or a Subchapter S Corp (a Sub S). Managing in this way
will help you protect your assets during a claim or lawsuit against your
company.

If you are planning of partnering with someone or
adding shareholders in your new company, make sure you have them sign a
LLC or Sub S agreement first as a part of your official documentation;
this agreement should mention all the rights, tasks, responsibilities
and obligations of all members or shareholders.

Also hire a good
Certified Public Accountant (CPA) who can handle all your important
paperwork. You also require an Employer Identification Number (an EIN)
for your company, a DUNS number (for business credit reporting) and, if
needed, a Fictitious Name or Doing Business As (DBA) registration

Setting up a bank account: It is necessary to set up a bank account in
the name of your company. Revenues received and expenses incurred should
go via this account, do not merge your personal account with this
account. Do all the company transactions via this company account.

Insurance: You need to have Secure General Liability and Auto/rental
equipment insurance in the name of your organization. This will protect
you against unexpected losses and property damage. You also need to
consider a Workers Compensation insurance plan for the safety of your
employees. Most clients refrain from allowing working at the site before
you provide proper insurance certificates required.

If you are
planning to do architectural layouts, engineering layouts and
calculations, you should secure Professional Liability (Errors and
Omissions) insurance.

Also with these, you need relevant
licenses, a written business plan, good labor and marketing and sales
strategy and sufficient start up money in order to ensure smooth
functioning of your construction company at its initial stage.
