What To Look For When Hiring Construction and Design Firms

December 31, 2014

The building and renovation of orthodontic clinics requires the help of
healthcare architects. Contrary to what most people think, orthodontic
clinics require a lot of specifications and if you are not familiar with
it, then you will loose functional space in your clinic.

If you live in Maryland, Northern Virginia and Washington DC, then
there are a lot of construction and design firms that can help you
optimize the space in your orthodontic clinic. However, with the many
construction firms that specialize in constructing and renovating modern
healthcare facilities, how do you know which one to choose?

One
of the most important things to consider when looking for a healthcare
architect or a construction firm is its tenure in the industry. There
are a lot of design concepts related to the healthcare industry and a
construction firm that has been around in the industry for a long time
has years of experience and can handle any kinds of concerns that you
may have with your clinic. Moreover, if the firm has been around for a
long time, then they have already handled all possible situations thus
they can handle any problems that arise during the construction or
renovation of your clinic.

Another thing to consider when
looking for a building firm that specializes in the healthcare industry
is the extra services that they provide. Some firms only provide
blueprints for the construction while others see to it that they handle
the building process from start to finish. Choose a healthcare architect
that works with an interior designer. The interior designer will be
able to make your clinic more attractive by incorporating ne interior
decorating ideas.

Another thing to consider when looking for a construction and design
firm in Maryland, Northern Virginia and Washington DC is to choose those
that can expedite the whole construction or renovation process. As a
dentist, you want nothing more than to have your new clinic so that you
can start receiving clients. A good construction and design firm will be
able to work with your schedule and you do not need to even close your
clinic so that they can begin with the construction.

These are
some of the important things that you need to consider when it comes to
looking for the right construction and design firm in your area.
Fortunately, there are a lot of reputable firms in the Maryland,
Northern Virginia and Washington DC so finding the right one should not
be difficult at all.

Tips for Starting Your Own Construction Company

December 27, 2014

Before you plan to set up your own construction business that will
help you maximize profits and get better returns on investment, it is
essential to keep certain things in mind. You need to answer some basic
question first, why you want to start this company? Is this the correct
time to initiate this business? Do you have enough funds and resources
that are required to start a construction business? Once you get the
answers to these questions, follow the below tips to ensure smooth
functioning of the company.

Proper management: Decide on a name for your company
and then the first thing to do is to manage as a Limited Liability
Company (an LLC) or a Subchapter S Corp (a Sub S). Managing in this way
will help you protect your assets during a claim or lawsuit against your
company.

If you are planning of partnering with someone or
adding shareholders in your new company, make sure you have them sign a
LLC or Sub S agreement first as a part of your official documentation;
this agreement should mention all the rights, tasks, responsibilities
and obligations of all members or shareholders.

Also hire a good
Certified Public Accountant (CPA) who can handle all your important
paperwork. You also require an Employer Identification Number (an EIN)
for your company, a DUNS number (for business credit reporting) and, if
needed, a Fictitious Name or Doing Business As (DBA) registration

Setting up a bank account: It is necessary to set up a bank account in
the name of your company. Revenues received and expenses incurred should
go via this account, do not merge your personal account with this
account. Do all the company transactions via this company account.

Insurance: You need to have Secure General Liability and Auto/rental
equipment insurance in the name of your organization. This will protect
you against unexpected losses and property damage. You also need to
consider a Workers Compensation insurance plan for the safety of your
employees. Most clients refrain from allowing working at the site before
you provide proper insurance certificates required.

If you are
planning to do architectural layouts, engineering layouts and
calculations, you should secure Professional Liability (Errors and
Omissions) insurance.

Also with these, you need relevant
licenses, a written business plan, good labor and marketing and sales
strategy and sufficient start up money in order to ensure smooth
functioning of your construction company at its initial stage.

Organizational Setup Of A Civil Construction Company

December 23, 2014

This
article looks at some of the departments and organizational structure
of a civil construction company. It talks about the people behind the
scenes and their roles and responsibilities. All around us we see
infrastructure such as buildings, roads, highways, parks etc. It is the
job of a civil construction company, to develop this infrastructure that
we love so dearly and is a part of our every day lives. In this article
we will look more into the organizational setup of a construction
company. We will take a brief overview of the people behind the
scenesand what their roles are.

At
the top of the construction company there mostly is a chairman. His job
is to offer overall guidance to the company in terms of strategy, head
the annual general meetings of the company and look at key decisions for
positioning of the company.

After the chairman comes the
managing director. The managing director plays a more active role in the
daily processes of the company. Top managers of different departments
usually report directly to the managing director and keep him updated on
the performance of their respective departments. The managing director
has a lot of responsibility on his shoulders and is responsible for the
profit, loss and overall growth of the company.

After the
managing director comes the top-level management of the company. In
larger companies there may also be a vice president or president as a
link in between to the managing director. In such cases the top-level
management reports to the president and then the president to the
managing director. The top-level managers usually head individual
departments. Some of these departments are sales, accounts, projects,
purchase, hr etc.

The sales department would usually have a sales
head at the top with sales managers and business development managers
under him, reporting directly to him. The sales teams job is to develop
new business for the verticals of the company and to maintain
relationships with their customers.

In
construction this may involve interaction with top builders for work,
advertising activities, gathering new project information from industry
magazines and journals etc. The sales head ensures that the order book
is maintained with sufficient new business. He also motivates and
disciplines his team to achieve targets and perform better.

The
accounting department as the word suggests maintains the proper accounts
of the construction company engaged in construction engineering. They
maintain books of account, ledgers, payments received and payments made
etc. In construction accounting is a very important aspect. The number
of transactions is large and very dynamic. Thus having a solid accounts
team is essential.

Moreover taxation in construction is complex
and varied. A good accounts team ensures that all taxes are being
accounted for properly and deposited on time. They also maintain
projected cash flow requirements and prepare balance sheets and profit
and loss statements of the company. The accounts department consists on
accountants, chartered accountants, auditors etc.

As you can see
we have barely covered 20% of the organization structure and there are
already so many people involved. The sheer manpower required to complete
infrastructure projects is huge. Large construction companies employ
thousands of people across various departments just to manage their
activities. Not all companies have the same organizational structures.
They differ according to the company’s own management style and distinct
characteristics. We will take a deeper look into the other departments
such as tendering, projects, purchase, human resources etc. of the
construction company’s structure in our next articles.

Home Construction Process – Tread The Easier Way

December 19, 2014

Who doesn’t have the secret dream of building one’s own home? For a
lot of people, transforming their dream into reality isn’t really an
easy job, mostly due to strained finnacial circumstances. However, if
you are not a member of this lot, you are of course lucky. The job with
the six-figure salary is finally in your hand and you want to move out
of your shabby apartment and live in a house of your own. Probably, the
only problem that you have faced is, you have searched a lot but failed
to locate a house of your choice. Following a thorough two months’
search, you have finally decided to build a house of your own. Building
your own home could be extremely rewarding or extremely problematic.
Based on your preparation and level of determination, your home building
process could be a pleasurable or painful experience.

When it comes to home building, plot is the most
important factor. Again, buying a good plot and hiring a good contractor
isn’t everything. Here are a few tips to help you talk to your
contractor regarding the fundamentals of a house construction.

First of all, make certain that you have the constructors put in the
correct size doors for your parking lot. You would never want to reach
home for the first time only to find that your car doesn’t slot in the
garage. Thus, prior to starting the construction work, you need to
decide on how many vehicles you want in your parking space. Consider
questions like – Do you need a two-car parking lot or a three-car?
Attached or Detached? Before the foundation is set and it’s too late,
it’s advisable to take these important factors into consideration. You
also need to shop around construction companies in Slough and settle on
the one that’s genuine and gives value to your home.

One more home building option to reflect on is a washbowl in your
laundry or utility section. When the children return from playing soccer
and their dresses are all dirty, it would be nice to have a place where
they can stock their dirty shoes and socks without scattering mud and
dirt all over your home. A deep basin is a good idea so you can stuff it
with water for washing something or thoroughly cleaning various items.
Just make sure that you get this mentioned in the architectural plan so
your constructor can make the plumbing designs accordingly. For loft
conversions in Slough, it’s extremely crucial to appoint a construction
company that has relevant experience in this field.

Next, decide
how many bathrooms you want or need in your home. It’s advisable to
have a washroom in your bedchamber and one for every two other guest
rooms. You also need to decide whether you need a full bath for guests
in the basement or a half-bath in the antechamber. Prior to laying down
the foundation, make sure that you have settled on all these points- if
that cement is set, it will be too late to make any alterations.

Construction Management Continued

December 15, 2014

This article further talks about effective methods used in
construction management. In our last article we discussed about the
first 3 points of construction management, which were: never over
commit, plan in detail, always have a plan B. Today we will continue to
look at more tips and techniques of making a project successful through
the right planning. So here goes: Tip 4. Overconfidence! Overconfidence
is a huge problem and one of the main reasons why a lot of projects go
off track. The inexperienced construction manager when overconfident
will tend to take on more than he can handle. He will almost certainly
repeat the first mistake, which is over commitment and will also
overlook the second and third details, which are planning and options.
He will see no need to plan in detail and have a requirement for back up
options. We are only human and it is good know your limitations. When
in doubt over the outcome of a task, take out a pen and paper and jot
down the detailed sequence of events and plan accordingly. Plan for
delays and keep your options open.

Tip 5: Assumption. We have a habit of assuming that
things will be done. Well the truth is if it isn’t happening it wont
finish. Never assume that a task will be done. One of the most critical
mistakes a project manager makes is that he assumes that a certain
vendor would complete the task on the stipulated time. Don’t assume,
check if the activity is happening as per daily plan, if it isn’t or of
there is a delay ask the contractor to compensate by adding more people.
If more people aren’t available, involve option B and ask him to split
the work so it gets done.

Remember in the sequence of events if
one task is delayed the other task will inevitably get delayed and the
reaction will continue eventually leading to a delayed project. So it is
important again to check if activities are moving as per plan and if
not then to use options.

Tip 6: Don’t Trust Anyone: Even though
there are a lot of good folks out there, there are also people who over
commit and fleece. It is a sad truth about our trade but there is
nothing to worry this easy tip will take care of most problems when
applied properly. Always have things in writing. Before starting out any
task make sure the labor, sub contractor, material supplier or even a
client you’re dealing with know exactly what’s expected of them.

Be
it the performance of a task, to the makes and specifications of
materials being used, have everything in writing and that you both agree
on the terms laid down. Many a times while building a house people have
faced issues with contractors and vice versa, so this point is not just
for construction managers but also individual house owners.

As
you can see from this series of articles on construction management that
if these 6 points are kept in mind they can definitely improve the
projects outcome. They will lead to happier customers and a more relaxed
mind. You will be on control of the activities onsite and off site.
When things move off track you will have a plan to rectify it. This is
why construction management is such an important activity in today’s day
and age.
